BiodiversiTea – die NFDI4Biodiversity Coffee Lecture #9

Organisation: NFDI4Biodiversity

Exchange and drink tea: The online format BiodiversiTea offers a forum for presenting and discussing work, projects, tools and topics from and around the NFDI4Biodiversity community. Once a month, we meet online for an hour - for exciting presentations and lively discussions over a cup of tea (or coffee). The group is open to anyone who would like to find out about and discuss current developments and topics relating to biodiversity data. Membership of NFDI4Biodiversity is not necessary.

Fitting to the season, the BiodiversiTea is getting icy. Bring along your hot bevarage and enjoy the warming data story.

Topic in December 2024
Drifting data - From the Arctic ice floe to PANGAEA’s digital archive

Speakers
Daniela Ransby
(Data manager and editor in PANGAEA – Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science) & Sinhué Torres-Valdés (Chemical oceanographer at Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research)

That's what it is about
The MOSAiC expedition gathered a vast array of environmental data from the Arctic, requiring careful planning and coordination to ensure its successful management and publication. This lecture offers two perspectives on the journey of this data: a data manager who guided the process from expedition preparation to repository publication and a scientist who collected and authored parts of the dataset during the fieldwork.

Daniela Ransby will describe the logistical and technical efforts involved in handling diverse datasets, from setting up systems for real-time data transfer and metadata curation to ensuring FAIR compliance and long-term accessibility through repositories like PANGAEA. Sinhué Torres-Valdés will share experiences from the field, discussing the challenges of data collection in Arctic conditions and the collaborative processes that supported data sharing within the project.

Together, their stories provide a practical look at the workflows and teamwork required to make MOSAiC data available for future research. This session invites a discussion on balancing fieldwork realities with the demands of data management in a large-scale, interdisciplinary project.
